Context

As a UI designer on Nuance's automotive team, I contributed to the redesign of the Entune and Enform mobile applications for Toyota and Lexus. These companion apps connect to vehicle infotainment systems, allowing users to plan trips, access navigation services, and complete travel-related tasks before and during their journey.

Although the applications served different brands, they shared the same core functionality, differing primarily in visual design, branding, and color palette across iOS and Android platforms.

My Role

In my role, I designed the Android experiences for the Toyota Entune and Lexus Enform mobile applications. Working from UX research insights and business requirements, I created high-fidelity designs and interactive prototypes that adhered to Material Design standards while supporting each brand's unique identity.

I collaborated closely with development teams and stakeholders throughout the project, conducting regular design reviews and iterative refinements to ensure a successful implementation.

Challenges & Solutions

Modernizing a Legacy Experience

The applications had not been redesigned in nearly ten years. Working closely with UX researchers and stakeholders, we reimagined key workflows to align with modern user expectations, mobile capabilities, and design standards.

Maintaining Consistency Across Brands and Platforms

While Entune and Enform shared the same functionality, each required a unique visual identity. We established a consistent user experience across Toyota and Lexus brands while adhering to both Android and iOS design conventions.

Supporting Third-Party Integrations

The applications integrated with several external services, requiring careful adherence to partner branding guidelines while ensuring a seamless and cohesive user experience.

Reflections & Learnings

This project provided my first opportunity to work within a large product organization and design mobile experiences for globally recognized automotive brands. It strengthened my expertise in iOS and Android design patterns while deepening my understanding of Apple's Human Interface Guidelines and Google's Material Design system.

Equally important, the project taught me how to collaborate effectively with UX researchers, developers, and stakeholders, communicate design rationale, and confidently advocate for user-centered solutions throughout the design process.
